Of course, knowing what vaccinations not to give is also important. We always tailor the vaccinations your pet receives by considering his or her lifestyle and how much contact there will be with other animals. No two pets are alike, so this customization makes sure that your pet is not receiving vaccinations he or she does not need. For example, even if your pet is mostly an “indoor” or “at home” pet, if he boards or goes to a groomer frequently, a Bordetella vaccine is recommended.

Core vaccines to help maintain your dog’s health include:

  • DA2PPV - This protects your pet from Distemper, Parvovirus, Hepatitis, and Adenovirus
  • Rabies

Likewise, core vaccines for cats are:

  • FVRCP- This protects your cat from feline distemper, rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus.
  • Rabies
  • Feline leukemia for any cats that will go outdoors

Rabies is a fatal virus and the vaccination is required by law. All pets must be current on their rabies vaccine for a technician appointment or admitted to the hospital for care. 

Most puppies and kittens require several rounds of vaccines to make sure the immune system is protected and strengthened, as well as deworming. Your pet’s lifestyle is always considered when we decide what types of parasite prevention are needed.

Pet Heartworm Prevention

Because heartworm is such a serious health threat, we want to make sure that your pet is protected against this easily preventable disease. Your pet will be tested for heartworm at his or her yearly check-up, and Rocky Point Animal Hospital will prescribe a monthly heartworm preventive medication for your pet to take year-round.
